Waiter call systems and customer pagers: which to choose for your business

Wireless customer pager for hospitality

Do your customers wait standing at the bar? Do your waiters not know which table needs something?

Wireless call systems solve exactly that. Before buying you just need to be clear on two things: what type you need and in what format. Let's get to the point.

Two different systems (and they don't do the same thing)

Customer pager. It's the device you give the customer when they order at the bar. They sit down and, when their order is ready, the device vibrates, sounds and lights up. Ideal for fast food, burger bars, cafés, bakeries or anywhere the customer collects at the bar. No more calling out numbers.

Waiter call button. It's the other way round: a button that stays on the table. When the customer wants to order, pay or call, they press it, and the alert reaches the waiter (on a display or a watch they wear on their wrist). Ideal for restaurants with tables, large terraces or venues where the waiter can't be everywhere.

Quick summary: the pager alerts the customer; the call button alerts the waiter.

Square or round? What really changes

It's the most common question. And the short answer: for how they work it makes no difference; what changes is convenience and space.

  • Round (coaster type). The classics. They stack in a column, are comfortable to hand out and to hold, and the customer identifies them at once. They take up a bit more on the charging base.
  • Square or rectangular. They stack flush and take up less room on the bar. They tend to look more modern and some have a display with the number. A good option if you have little space behind the bar.

In performance (range, vibration, battery) you won't notice a difference. Choose by space and by looks.

Which one should you buy?

It depends how your venue works:

  • The customer collects at the bar (fast food, café, bakery, food truck) → you'll want a customer pager.
  • You serve at the table (restaurant, tapas bar, large terrace, amusement arcade) → you'll want a waiter call button.
  • Both → no problem: they're independent systems and you can have both.

A practical tip: think about how many units you really need. A pack of 10 covers a medium venue; for a large one or with a lot of turnover, better 20. It's better to have a couple spare than to fall short on a Saturday night.
