It's one of the questions we're asked most. You have an alarm installed, you pay for its maintenance, and when we talk about cameras the first reaction is: "but isn't that the same thing?"
No. And the difference is more important than it seems.
The alarm alerts. The camera shows you what happened
An alarm goes off when someone enters where they shouldn't. It makes noise, alerts the monitoring centre, and at best, scares off the intruder. But that's where its job ends.
The camera doesn't prevent anything on its own, but it leaves you something the alarm can't give you: a recording of what happened. Who came in, which way, what they took, at what time. That's what you need for a police report, for the insurance, or simply to know what happened in your business while you weren't there.
The alarm tells you something happened. The camera tells you exactly what happened.
Cases where the alarm alone isn't enough
Think about these situations, all real in hospitality and retail businesses:
When the difference shows
An employee takes money from the till during their shift — the alarm doesn't go off, because they have authorised access.
A customer falls and then claims compensation — with no recording, your word is worth the same as theirs.
They break in at night and the alarm sounds, but by the time someone arrives they've already gone — with no camera, you don't even know how many there were or what they took.
Discrepancies in the inventory that you don't know are thefts, errors or shrinkage.
The good news: you don't have to choose
It's not about replacing your alarm with cameras. It's that each covers what the other can't. The alarm protects when the business is closed and no one should be inside. The cameras protect 24 hours a day, whether you're there or not, and give you evidence of what's happened.
Together, alarm and cameras form a far more complete system than either on its own, and usually without the cost of adding cameras being very different from keeping just the alarm.
