Camera for the garage: which is the best option and why

Cámara para el garaje: cuál es la mejor opción y por qué

The garage is one of the most vulnerable points of any home — and one of the least attended to when it comes to installing cameras. It's an enclosed space, with little light, accessed from outside and which in many cases connects directly to the inside of the house.

Protecting it well isn't complicated, but it does require choosing the right type of camera for each situation.

Private garage in a house or villa

What works best here. An indoor camera with night vision pointing at the garage's entrance door, and another outdoor one covering the access from the street if the garage has its own exit. With those two positions you have both the outside and the inside covered.

→ Night vision essential — garages have little natural light and night-time access is the most frequent in vehicle theft.

→ Wide angle — a garage is a large space. A wide-angle camera covers more area with less equipment.

→ Damp resistance — garages accumulate moisture. Choose a camera with suitable IP protection for damp interiors.

Parking space in a communal garage

What works best here. In a communal garage you can't install cameras that record communal areas without the association's authorisation. What you can do is install a camera aimed exclusively at your vehicle and your space, without capturing the neighbours' spaces.

Important: If you want to cover the communal areas of the shared garage — accesses, ramps, aisles — you need approval at a residents' meeting. Without that approval, the camera can only point at your space.

Compact, discreet camera — in a communal garage space, a small camera aimed at the vehicle is enough and less contentious with the neighbours.

Battery or own power — if you don't have a socket near your space, a battery or solar camera saves you from installation work.

Remote access — to be able to check your vehicle's status from your phone without going down to the garage.

Tip: Place the camera up high and angled downwards towards the door or the vehicle. That way you capture the faces of whoever enters, not just the top of their head — which makes the footage far more useful if you need to use it as evidence.
