The bags are packed, the house locked up and you're already thinking about switching off. But at some point on the trip that doubt appears: are the cameras recording? What if something's happened and there's no footage?
It's a very reasonable worry. And it has a solution — if you know what can go wrong and how to check it from wherever you are.
What can make the cameras stop recording?
- A power cut at home. If there's a blackout while you're away, the recorder switches off. Some restart on their own when the power comes back, others don't. If yours has no automatic restart, the cameras stay stopped until someone switches it on.
- The router has restarted. An automatic router update or a brief internet cut can disconnect the WiFi cameras. With no connection, there's no remote access and, in some systems, no recording either.
- The drive has filled up. If the recorder doesn't have overwriting enabled, when the space runs out it simply stops recording. Without warning. You could go two weeks with no footage and not know it.
How to check it from your phone wherever you are
→ Open the system app and check you see a live image on all the cameras. If any comes up black or won't connect, something's failed.
→ Check a recent recording — look for any moment in the last few hours. If there's an image, the system is recording correctly.
→ Check the available drive space from the app or the recorder menu. If it's at the limit, enable automatic overwriting.
Tip before you go: spend 5 minutes just before leaving the house opening the app and checking everything works. It's the best moment — if there's a problem, you can still fix it before the trip.
And if while on holiday you spot something failing that you can't fix yourself, the most practical thing is to have someone you trust near home who can take a look at the recorder. A restart is usually enough in most cases.
